Hair Mineral Analysis
A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) simply stated, is a diagnostic test that measures the levels of healthful minerals and toxic heavy metals in a persons hair. This gives a good indication of the levels of heavy metals such as mercury and levels of minerals which are present in the body.
The information from this test will then guide the nutrition, supplement and detoxification protocol which will be based on your unique body chemistry. Supplements will be given based on the results of this test which will correct your mineral deficiencies and balance important mineral ratios in the body. When this is done correctly, the body will be brought back into balance and its self-healing mechanisms will be activated. The body itself, is then able to heal, correct and reverse long-standing chronic health issues.
Once minerals become more balanced and deficiencies are corrected the body will be able to release and remove heavy metals from tissue storage sites which are causing disease and illness. Read my article which explains how heavy metals are the underlying cause of chronic health problems here and why you should remove them from your body in order to restore your health.
This is how I have personally resolved or improved my chronic health issues.
HEAVY METALS TESTED:
- Toxic or Bio-unavailable forms of Copper, Iron, Calcium, Manganese
However, a hair tissue mineral analysis is much more than a test for minerals and heavy metal toxins. It can also provide information on:
- Energy production
- Hormones production
- Adrenal and thyroid glands
Providing a mineral blueprint of one’s biochemistry, a hair tissue mineral analysis can provide pertinent information about one’s metabolic rate, energy levels, sugar and carbohydrate tolerance, stage of stress, immune system and glandular activity. This screening test can also be used to reduce the guesswork involved when recommending nutritional supplements and dietary modifications.
A hair tissue mineral analysis performed by Analytical Research Labs, Inc., is a screening test for the level of 20 minerals and toxic metals in a sample of hair. It is a tissue mineral biopsy that is non-invasive, relatively inexpensive and extremely accurate.
A hair tissue mineral analysis is considered a standard test used around the world for the biological monitoring of trace elements and toxic metals in humans and animals species. The same technology is used for soil testing and testing of rock samples to detect mineral levels.
Hair, like all other body tissues, contains minerals that are deposited as the hair grows. Although the hair is dead, the minerals remain as the hair continues to grow out. A sample of hair cut close to the scalp provides information about the mineral activity in the hair that took place over the past three to four months, depending on the rate of hair growth
The test measures the levels of 20 or more minerals in the hair with an accuracy of plus or minus about 3%. This is about the same level of accuracy as most blood tests, or a little better. However, for the best accuracy, especially of the water-soluble elements, the hair sample must not bet washed at the hair testing laboratory. The preparation of the hair sample at the laboratory is a debate that exists among the laboratories that offer hair mineral testing.
As an aside, hair is extremely useful for testing many things besides minerals. These include drugs, toxic chemicals and DNA. Hair is frequently used in forensic medicine, and in drug testing clinics. It is also used worldwide for biological monitoring of many animal species for toxic metals.
WHY MEASURE MINERALS?
Minerals are sometimes called the ‘sparkplugs’ of the body. They are needed for millions of enzymes as co-factors, facilitators, inhibitors and as part of the enzymes themselves. As a result, they have a great deal to do with the health of our bodies. By analyzing mineral imbalances in the body, one can learn a lot about the root causes and how to correct hundreds of common physical and mental health conditions.
This information allows Sara to guide a nutrition, supplement and detoxification programme which is specific to your unique body chemistry and personal needs.
Example of a hair test with interpretation:
WHY USE HAIR FOR MEASURING MINERALS?
- Hair makes an excellent biopsy material for many reasons:
- Sampling is simple and non-invasive
- Hair is a stable biopsy material that remains viable for years, if needed, and requires no special handling.
- Mineral levels in the hair are about ten times that of blood, making them easy to detect and measure accurately in the hair
- Hair is a fairly rapidly growing tissue.
- The body often throws off toxic substances in the hair, since the hair will be cut off and lost to the body.
- Mineral levels are kept relatively constant in the blood even when pathology is present. Hair mineral values often vary by a factor of ten or much more, making measurement easier and providing a tremendous amount of accurate knowledge about the cells and the soft tissue of our bodies.
- Toxic metals are easier to detect in the hair than in the blood.
- Hair testing provides a long-term reading, while blood tests and urine tests provide a more instantaneous reading of the body.
- Extremely cost-effective, accurate and reliable test when it is performed well.
This powerful form of testing ones metabolism, oxidation, mineral ratios and toxins can be the first step toward improving or correcting many physical or mental conditions.
